The Daily News
The New York Daily News is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 and headquartered in New York City. The paper was the first tabloid in the United States and once had one of the largest circulations of any newspaper in the world. It was best known for its sensational crime, scandal and violence coverage, lurid photographs and cartoons, and other entertainment features. It has also been renowned for its intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, and comics.
Unlike its sister publication, the Chicago Tribune, and other major newspapers, the Daily News is not owned by a chain of owners and remains editorially independent. The News has often taken on conservative political positions, including support of isolationism in the early 1940s and a strong anti-communist stance during the Cold War. It has shifted toward a centrist, liberally inclined position in recent years, partly as a reaction to the conservative polemics of its crosstown rival, the New York Post.
In addition to its regular news and opinion departments, the Daily News publishes a number of special editions and supplements such as the Sunday Book Review and the Weekly Calendar. It is also home to a wide variety of sports columns and a large number of celebrity and entertainment interviews. The News has also been known for its investigative journalism, such as the 1974 report of a Manhattan abortion clinic that resulted in the death of an unborn baby.
Daily News employees have a reputation for being close-knit and friendly. They work hard together to meet deadlines and have a passion for their craft. It is a fast-paced environment where time management skills are key and there is room for growth. The Daily News is a great place to learn and grow in your career.
The 102-year-old News has been in trouble since it was sold to cost-slashing hedge fund Alden Global Capital last year. The News has suffered from layoffs and cutbacks, and its once-famous printing plant is now closed. The newspaper has also dropped several print editions and pushed its website ahead of the physical version.
Its online editions have a following, especially the NYDailyNews.com, which offers news and commentary on current events and politics in New York City. The website has an upscale audience and a strong following on social media.
